Adam Clayton Powell card
Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was a Baptist pastor and the first African American Congressman elected from New York State. The front of the card has a photo of Adam Clayton Powell standing next to and looking down at a woman holding a baby (most likely his wife Hazel Dorothy Scott and their son Adam Clayton Powell, III) and “VOTE FOR DADDY!” underneath the photo. Back of card has Powell’s listings of his accomplishments and reasons to re-elect him.

Handwritten petition addressed to “His Excellency Abraham Lincoln President of the United States” dated April 7, 1865 requesting the release of Confederate prisoner Alfred Layne (Company B 20th Tennessee) and signed by John B. Layne, T. H. Roberts, John Hugh Smith (Mayor of Nashville), W. G. Brownlow (Governor of Tennessee), and others.
