Scope and Contents Charles McClung McGhee (1828-1907) was the son of John and Elizabeth McClung McGhee and the great-grandson of James White. He was a financier, railroad executive, and a philanthropist. He graduated from East Tennessee University in 1846 and married Isabella White, daughter of Hugh White. She died in 1848 and in 1857 he married her sister Cornelia. McGhee was involved in the growth of railroads in the South, and had coal and iron interests. Scope and Contents Col. J. Y. (John Yates) Johnston (1839 -1916) was a native East Tennessean and a Confederate veteran. He was married to Susie Ayers (1849-1927), the niece of Joseph Jacques and his wife, whose estate she ultimately inherited. The couple were married in Knoxville in 1874. J. Y. Johnston was for many years the paymaster of the East Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia Railroad.
