Scope and Contents Papers of William Richard Caswell (1809-1862), a lawyer, military officer, and director of the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad. He was the son of Richard William and Sarah Lytle Caswell of North Carolina, and was the great-grandson of the first governor of North Carolina, Richard Caswell. He married Elizabeth Carter Gillespie, a descendant of Landon Carter and Col. John Carter.
