Scope and Contents Papers of John Sevier and son George Washington Sevier. 20 folders. Before receipt by the McClung Collection, papers were used by Nancy Sevier Madden for her book. She prepared a listing, divided by categories, and transcribed many of the documents. Because her listing was published in her book and will be seen by many researchers, it was decided to keep the papers in the order in which they were received (by category), rather than arrange them chronologically. Scope and Contents Cards, images, newspaper clippings glued to pages of scrapbook. Most images and clippings of women’s clothing and hats as well as social events (worldwide, not Knoxville). Pages crumbling on edges. Binding damaged, many pages loose. First page, in pencil “Mildred Ager [Eager?] Cumberland Gap, Tenn.”
Scope and Contents Ca. 1931 notes written by Mrs. Charles J. McClung (Anna Gay) re: the cream lace dress she wore at a November 1931 “Gay Nineties” ball in Knoxville. The dress was bought and worn in New Orleans in the late 1890s; hat and gloves also described. One note on letterhead + envelope; one printed sketch of 1890s dress; two 1931 clippings; one small envelope with three small handwritten notes.

Scope and Contents Unidentified scrapbook believed to be a Thornburgh family scrapbook. Contains clippings, including obituary for Col. Jacob Montgomery Thornburgh and re: death of Major Thomas Thornburgh killed by Indians in Wyoming in 1879. Also contains illustrations, including fashions, poems, and other printed material. 1 vol. Poor condition.

Scope and Contents James Thayer Van Deventer (1830-1910) was the son of Christopher Van Deventer (West Point, 1808)and Sarah Birckhead Van Deventer. He attended Yale Law School and was admitted to the bar in New York. He moved to Clinton, Iowa where he was treasurer and manager of the Iowa Land Company in 1856. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War leaving with the rank of Col. James Thayer Van Deventer married Laetitia Flournoy in 1862 in Clinton, Iowa.
