David A. Deaderick gold nugget watch fob

Identifier: Artifact 2014.007
Scope and Contents David A. Deaderick went to the California gold rush, ca. 1849-50, with the East Tennessee Gold Mining Company. He did not strike gold, but came back with a gold nugget he had made into a watch fob with a stone (amethyst?) or colored glass inlaid on the end, ca. 1852. His initials ‘DAD’ were etched into the stone.

Housed in small black jeweler’s box with ‘Huguenin’ on inside cover. This is where the family kept the fob for many years.

Jane Huff Stokely miniature watercolor portrait

Scope and Contents Jane Huff Stokely (1785-1865) was born in Va., the daughter of John Huff and Elinor Corder Huff, who moved to Cocke County when she was a small child. She and her brother Isaac were scalped by Indians and left for dead in 1792. She survived and always wore a bonnet to cover her scalp. She married Royal Stokely in 1805 and became the mother of ten children. The family lived in the Del Rio community. (See article by Eddie Walker, Newport Plain Talk, July 17, 1996).

Scope and Contents National Academy of Design first-prize silver medal awarded to Lloyd Branson, 1875. The medal was designed by William Barber, chief engraver of the U.S. Mint, and cast by the U.S. Mint for the National Academy of Design in silver and in bronze. 2 1/2” diameter. Silver was given to the first-prize winner; bronze to the second. In leather case with blue satin lining, Tiffany & Co., New York. (Case is damaged; in two pieces.)
