Regional 35mm Theatrical Shorts (NFPF 2007)
Content Description
35mm preservation elements for 11 regional commercials and a newsreel. Sam Orleans and Associates (Knoxville, TN), produced the newsreel, THE TENNESSEE REVIEW: OPERATION TEXTBOOK, and may have produced the other shorts as well. Chace Audio (Burbank, CA) and Cinetech (Valencia, CA) created the preservation elements.
[All short subjects have narration or overlaid sound; some have synchronized sound.]
THE TENNESSEE REVIEW: OPERATION TEXTBOOK (1946, b&w): An incomplete newsreel describing the University of Tennessee's response to enrollment surges induced by the G.I. Bill, as well as some of the innovative work taking place at the Knoxville campus.
EAST TENNESSEE ELECTRIC COMPANY: WASHING MACHINE AD (1941, b&w): Advertisement for electric washing machines, available from a local merchant.
GOURDIN'S JEWELERS (1946, Cinecolor/b&w): Advertisement for a Knoxville, TN, jeweler.
BROADWAY SUPPLY COMPANY: THE SHOE SHINE LADY (1947, b&w): Domestic skit advertising for a Knoxville, TN, hardware store.
THE GLASS HUT RESTAURANT (1947, b&w): Advertisement for a Knoxville, TN, restaurant.
RIT PRESENTS: MARJORIE TURNS DECORATOR (ca. 1948, Ansco color): Domestic skit advertising Rit dye.
LET'S ALL SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM (ca. 1945, tinted): Incomplete short to guide audiences in singing along to "The Star-Spangled Banner."
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE MANAGEMENT (early 1950s, b&w): Incomplete Christmas-themed short.
BROCK CANDY BARS: VERSION 1 (late 1940s, Ansco color): Advertisement for a Chattanooga, TN, based candy manufacturer.
BROCK CANDY BARS: VERSION 2 (1954, b&w): Advertisement for a Chattanooga, TN, based candy manufacturer. Brooklyn Dodger Duke Snider appears as spokesman.
DON GIBSON TALENT SHOW: THE MIDDAY MERRY-GO-ROUND/TENNESSEE BARN DANCE (ca. 1952, b&w): Promotional short for a local talent show; two programs on Knoxville, TN, radio station WNOX, as well as Knoxville, TN, record label Valley Records, are mentioned.
WROL-RADIO AD (early 1940s, b&w): Promotional short for regular programs on Knoxville, TN, country-gospel radio station WROL.
[Sound and picture quality are generally good, with some fluctuations. Some dust, scratches, and changeover cues are visible.]
