Reel 10, Circa 1935-1936
Scope and Contents
Chinese men carry a white woman over uneven, muddy ground in a sedan chair. A raft floats on a river with several people on board. Chinese men carry a white man down to a boat moored at the river bank in a sedan chair as other men look on. The white man enters the boat, which turns out into the river with several people on board. The boat crosses the river, with low mountains in the background. Several people stand on the shore, then walk down to the water’s edge to enter another boat. Two men carrying a sedan chair walk down to the boat. The camera pans looking down a flooded urban street with many people moving through the water. In successive shots, the water is ankle-height, knee-height, or waist-height, and people wade through it, pull wagons, or push small boats. Flood waters rush through an open door. The camera looks down a street toward the water’s edge, framing a junk in the distance. Pedestrians cross a bridge over a wide river as water rushes rapidly at a high level. The camera pans across the river with numerous ships in the background. Chinese citizens handle boats in flooded urban streets. The camera dollies down a flooded urban street as Chinese citizens pilot boats and pedestrians wade through the water. Smoke curls out of a row of small ovens on dry ground. The camera dollies down a flooded urban street, along with boats, rafts, carts, and pedestrians. The camera pans across small covered boats grouped along the shore. The camera moves down a broad river with sloping hills on either bank, surveying large rafts as they pass. Several medium-sized boats and small rafts navigate the river as the camera passes. Several men disembark the boat and unwind a rope onshore, stretching it out to tow the boat through shallow rapids. Men re-coil the rope on the deck of the boat. The camera continues down-river, passing other boats along the way. Several Chinese men tow the boat onto shore again. The camera pans across the river and watches several rafts and boats negotiate rapids. The camera proceeds down the river.
