Scope and Contents

The House Family Collection contains materials descended through the prominent Knoxville family, co-founders of the House-Hasson Hardware Company. The bulk of the collection pertains to Sam Crawford House and his son, Henry Fleming House. The Collection includes correspondence, receipts, periodicals, currency, journals, and other materials.

Biographical / Historical

Sam Crawford House (1866-1936) is best known for co-founding House-Hasson Hardware Company on Asylum Avenue in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1906. In 1897, Sam married Mary Harper Smith (1877-1970) in Rogersville, Tennessee. Together Sam and Mary had four children: Georgia (1898-1994), Samuel Jr. (1899-1963), Henry Fleming (1904-2001), and Emma Louise (1909-1983). Youngest son, Henry F. House went on to be a World War II veteran and an engineer. His first wife was Nina Breazeale (1911-?) who he corresponded with frequently while stationed in Virginia and Georgia as a soldier.
