Scope and Contents
May 9, 1822. Letter to Mrs. Eliza Hale, Sullivan County (Tenn.) from her husband Philip Hale (Tuscaloosa). ALS. 4 pp (1 pc).
Letter addressed to "Mrs. Eliza Hale; Boatyard [Kingsport]; Sullivan County; East Tennessee"
No envelope - paper folded into rectangle and address written on back (Handwritten postage of 18.5 cents - approx $4.18 in 2021)
Letter addressed "Dear Wife" and Phillip calls her "Betsy" in the body of the letter.
Letter discusses sale of negroes with prices listed, travel plans, and he references his "dear little Catharine Ann & Eliza Jane, who you will kiss for me."
Signed "Philip S. Ha …" (end of signature torn off)
