May 17, 1862 letter from ‘A Conservative Man,’ New York, to Dr. Brownlow. May 19, 1862 response from W.G. Brownlow, Astor House, to ‘A Conservative Man’ on same paper. ALS 2 pp. (1 pc.) Re: Cruelty inflicted on Union men was by people “raised and educated in the midst of slavery.” Brownlow replied that the worst actions he witnessed were by Northern men. W.G. Brownlow, Providence, note to Mr. Crossman. June 3, 1862. Thanking him for the memorial of Roger Williams. ANS 1 pc. Carte-de-visite of William G. Brownlow. ‘Parson Brownlow’ printed on verso.
