Scope and Contents

Big Valley United Baptist Church of Christ Record Book, 1877-1904. Union County, Tenn. Big Valley Church was organized with twenty members in July 1849. It was located in the Lost Creek area of Big Valley in Union County, Tennessee (formerly Grainger County, Tenn.). The name at its formation was Big Valley United Baptist Church of Christ. This record book contains an index, with the Constitution on pages 3-5; Abstract of Principles on pages 6-7; Rules of Decorum on pages 8-9; Church Convention on pages 10-11; and List of Names of Members on pages 12-19. New records of regular meetings begin on May 1, 1877 (page 23) and continue until November 1904 (p. 214). There is a note dated May 1918 at the end of the volume regarding the death of C. Wilson. Z. (Zachariah) Acuff was the first Church Clerk in the volume and P. Hill was the last. There are several missing pages: 109-110, 113-114, 121-122, and 127-128. The Big Valley Church Record Book was in the possession of Benjamin Marchi and was brought in for microfilming by Mary Lynn Gilmore. Following microfilming in May 2010, Mr. Marchi donated the original volume to the McClung Historical Collection.
