Scope and Contents
Greene Co. Tenn. Civil War Documents East Tennessee relating to Greene County during the Civil War. 1st grouping – includes a 1866 listing of Union soldiers applying for a certificate of disability in East Tennessee. Included in the description is the type of wound or malady, where they were discharged, and occasionally the battle where the injury occurred. An example entry, "May 7th 1866 – Capt. David Fry – Co. F 2nd Tenn. Regt Mounted Inft – Discharged Annapolis Md 27th March 1865 – disease wound – Pension total – probably permanent – Residence Greeneville Tenn.". Note – Capt. David Fry arranged the November 1861 burning of the railroad bridge over Lick Creek in western Greene County. Civil War related, there is a Corporal Jesse Spears of Hawkins Co. applying for disability from wounds encountered in the War of 1812, Captain Gillenwater Company, Tenn. Militia. The last written page is receipt adjustments for Saml Doka. Approximately 57 soldiers from East Tennessee listed. 2nd grouping – Extensive grouping of papers relating to legal depositions and other documents recording the theft of horses and a sabre by Confederate soldiers in Greene County, Tenn. David Sevier is the administrator for George Jones (plaintiff) and W. E. Keller (defendant). Also included is an early invitation to the Freshman Hop given to the Graduating Class of the University of Tennessee in 1878. The invitation reads "E. T. U. Lamar House" with a vignette of marching Union soldiers above the letters. In 1879, the state legislature changed the name from East Tennessee University to the University of Tennessee.
