Scope and Contents

W. O. Whittle (1870-1947) was a native of Sevier County, descended from pioneer ancestors on both sides of his family. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1898. He was one of the founders of the Union Bank of Knoxville and had a career in banking for a number of years. For the last 17 years of his life he was the coordinator of the Tennessee state soil surveys carried out by the University of Tennessee and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Whittle was a local historian and genealogist. In addition to his genealogical research, he compiled a history of his church--First Methodist Church, Knoxville. Family research includes the following surnames: Blair, Bowman, Cunningham, Davis, Garner, Hicks, Houston, Jack, Keener, Lewis, McCallie, McCroskey, Montgomery, Ottlinger, Palmer, Smith/Smyth, Tipton, Warren, Whittle
