Scope and Contents
Papers of Samuel Mayes Arnell (1833-1903) from Columbia, Tenn., and Johnson City, Tenn.. He was a politician, postmaster, superintendent of schools, and a lawyer in Washington, D.C. Towards the end of his life was writing a history of Tennessee entitled, ‘Ten Years of Tennessee History’ or ‘The War of Secession and Reconstruction in Tennessee, 1861-1871.’ The manuscript volume is in the collection, along with several diaries or journal, correspondence from 1863 (medical Confederate conscription discharge)-1894, and newspaper clippings bout his death on July 20, 1903 in Johnson City, Tenn.. + folder of photocopies of original documents.
