Scope and Contents

The Armstrong Papers – Hileman Materials Collection is a collection of Armstrong correspondence and associated materials dating from 1880 to 1949. The papers were collected by Frances Hileman and later acquired by the McClung Collection. All of the letters in the Armstrong Papers-Hileman Material relate to Susie Armstrong or her extended family. Susie Armstrong was born Susie Norman in 1868 in Knox County, Tennessee, and married Thaddeus Armstrong in 1890. They had two children, Beatrice born in 1892 and Beauford, born in 1896. They moved to Pueblo, Colorado from Tennessee where Thaddeus died from illness in 1902. Susie and her children returned to Tennessee to live with her parents. Beatrice attended the Pleasant Hill Academy, a boarding school in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee. Beatrice later married Luther Minton and moved back to Pueblo. Correspondents include: J. L. and Anna Norma; James “J. M.” Norman, Lizzie (Norman) Green and Mattie (Norman) Coward; S. Armstrong; Beatrice (Armstrong) Minton and Beauford Armstrong, Mattie Lee Johnson.; Louise L. Poe, Julia Rambo and Alice Smith, all of Colorado; C. H. and Mary J. Casteel of Knoxville. There is material related to Oxy-Magneto, a medical cure available in Pueblo; the Triple Link Life Insurance Company of Illinois, etc.
