Account Book for General Store, possibly Blount County, Tenn. 1925-1929.

Tenn., Blount Co.(?) General Store ledger, June 1925 thru March 1930. Positive name and location not stated in book, but quick search shows that most of these folks were Blount Co., Greenback, Loudon, Sweetwater residents. Some names are: Lebow, Henman, Sing, Taylor, Callahan, Goodin, Brackett, Grigsby, Singleton, Ballard, Foster, Tipton, Bert Allen, Stipes, Tucker, Neely, Swaggerty, Bell, Williams, McClure, Doc Duncan, McInturf, Malcolm, Henry, Goins, House, Hitch, and a host of others, some 500+ pages of names and goods sold by cash, check or on credit. The store also pumped gas and sold oil and auto goods. The very neat and orderly bookkeeping shows that anything you could need or want could be purchased thru this store. Could this be a "company store" or close by a manufacturing plant or factory? There are many clues as folks spent good money for other than the necessities of life, especially at Christmas time and other holidays, paid cash or by check, drove out lots of gasoline, and did their post office business here. They also kept large accounts and bought lots of canned goods, Coca colas and sweets. A clue is given on page 429; May 1, 1929, "store burned". The books continue again on May 4. This well kept ledger has all of the customers names in alphabetical order in the first unnumbered pages, making research much easier. This is a great record of life in E. Tenn. in the 1920s.
