Scope and Contents
The Lenoir Chambers Papers consist primarily of personal correspondence to and from Laura Lenoir of Loudon, Tennessee. The papers range in date from 1864 to 1876, with some undated material. Correspondents include Laura Lenoir (later Mrs. H. A. Chambers), Loudon and Madisonville, Tenn.; Captain H. A. Chambers (Henry Chambers), Morganton, Burke County, N. C., and Loudon and Madisonville, Tenn.; brother Fred Lenoir, Wheelock, Tex.; cousin I. W. Avery (Isaac Wheeler Avery), Dalton, Ga.; Thos. R. Roulhae(?) (Roulhac?), Hillsboro, N. C.; Eugenie Gifford, College Hill; aunt Ruth A. Chambers, Enola, N. C.; Lewis (or Louis) Lenoir, Lebanon, Tenn.; and others. In some cases the handwriting is difficult to read. Laura Lenoir (1846-1891) was the daughter of Albert Sobieski Lenoir (1803-1861) and Catherine Frieling Welcker Lenoir who married in 1837 and lived in Loudon County, Tenn. She was the fifth of ten children. Laura married Henry Chambers on January 30, 1867. They first lived in Loudon and later in Madisonville, East Tennessee.
