Scope and Contents

Thomas Edward Roach (1937-1985) was a member of the East Tennessee Historical Society and an avid genealogist. He restored two structures on the National Register of Historic Places and donated Shields family papers to the library. He wrote a number of local history articles published in the Grainger County News and the Jefferson Standard. These pieces and other writings were collected in “Gleanings from a Scrapbook” (1983). Tom started a periodical “East Tennessee Roots” and published a number of genealogies as well as doing genealogical research for hire. Includes research on the Whitlock, Fennell, Cocke, Jarnigan, Roach, Bean, Crain, Couch, Harris, Holt, Lea, Price & Russell families. Mainly Grainger and Jefferson Counties, Tenn. Collection includes photocopies of records, family group charts, Mr. Roach’s research notes, genealogy-related correspondence between Mr. Roach and genealogical clients. There is also correspondence re: his work with East Tennessee Roots, his books and newsletters. The collection includes typed copies/ transcriptions and partial copies of some manuscripts (McClung Papers and others), some copy photographs, and many photocopies of photographs.
