Scope and Contents

Family papers of Jesse Brown (1776-1847) of Washington County, Va., and Carter County, Tenn., and descendants, especially Jesse Brown's son Elijah Brown (1817-1891) of Blount County, Tenn., as well as his family and descendants. The gift includes four Bibles, three having family records (Jesse Brown, Enoch Dexter Brown, and W. R. Hood-S. A. Rule). The collection includes a handmade record book on Jesse Brown's family, as well as land transaction documents regarding tracts in the following areas: Blount County, Tenn. (including Districts No. 7, 9, 12, and 19); District No. 10, Sevier County, Tenn.; Carter County, Tenn.; and Washington County, Va. The collection also includes correspondence; receipts, promissory notes, contracts, and other documents; photographs and prints; newspaper clippings; genealogical notes; and church-related and miscellaneous items. Note that the basic arrangement of the collection is chronological within the groupings. Exceptions occur with oversized documents, which are stored in a separate box (Box 3).

Family records and other relevant materials from the Bibles (Elijah Brown Bible, Jesse Brown Family Bible, Enoch Brown Bible, and Hood Family Bible) have been copied and placed in the Brown and Hood Genealogical Files.
