A letter from Laura Thornborough dated Sept. 10, 1970 says this material was given in 1960 and identified as “Smoky Mountain Families.” The material was collected in the summers of 1921 and 1922 by Isabel Gordon of Knoxville (in 1970 she was Mrs. Hugh Carter of Washington, DC). She gathered the material as part of her work for a M.A. and Ph. D in Anthropology at Columbia University.
