Scope and Contents

The East Tennessee Packing Company (ETPC) Collection includes company records and documents pertaining to the 87 years of company operations, plus some relevant documents from before and after the company's time frame of existence. James B. Madden in Knoxville, Tennessee founded the company in 1895. The documents, ca. 1886 - 1984, include account books, deeds, corporate minutes, audit reports, and other related materials. The collection also includes photographs of personnel, property, facilities, and events of the ETPC, as well as advertising and promotional items. Many documents and photographs relate to two events in particular: the 60th birthday/anniversary celebration of ETPC on June 21, 1955, and the 83rd birthday/anniversary celebration of ETPC on July 14, 1978. The 1978 celebration includes photographs of Howard Baker, Jr., Archie Campbell, Victor Ashe, Randy Tyree, and ETPC President Dave Traver. Extensive notes pertaining to union disputes and the gradual phase-out of the company are included. Union material also includes documents on a case with the National Labor Relations Board. David M. Traver, the last president of the ETPC, donated this collection to the McClung Historical Collection in 1986. The ETPC is also known as Selecto, a closely associated brand name (and used an official company name toward the latter years of the company's existence). Other affiliated businesses include Purity Meats and Volunteer Processing Company. In April 2004 Mr. Traver donated two Selecto / East Tennessee Packing Company calendars, 1935, 1936 (via ETHS).
