John Sevier Paper -- Wardlaw gift on behalf of the Putnam Morrison Family.

Identifier: MSC 0172

Scope and Contents

Papers of John Sevier and son George Washington Sevier. 20 folders. Before receipt by the McClung Collection, papers were used by Nancy Sevier Madden for her book. She prepared a listing, divided by categories, and transcribed many of the documents. Because her listing was published in her book and will be seen by many researchers, it was decided to keep the papers in the order in which they were received (by category), rather than arrange them chronologically. Papers of John Sevier, 1803-1815. 27 items + 1 envelope; land records and related papers, 1786-1844. 17 pcs.; Expense records, 1791-1822. 14 pcs.; Historians’ requests for information, 1822-1852. 12 pcs. + envelope. George Washington Sevier papers, 1813-1839. 5 pcs. Miscellaneous, 1799-1875. 6 pcs. Old copies of letters. Silk brocade dress (thought by the family to have been the wedding dress of Catherine “Bonny Kate” Sherrill Sevier + chemise. Dated early 19th century by textiles curator at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, April 10, 1987. (Too late to be the wedding dress of Mrs. John Sevier, but dating from her lifetime).
