Collection of Fain family papers from East Tennessee. Includes: diaries of Eliza Rhea Anderson Fain (1816-1892), dating from 1834 to 1892; military papers of Richard G. Fain; papers from the Mossy Creek Cotton Mill, 1862-1879; account books, Bible entries for Fain and Anderson families; photographs; almanacs; recipes; slaves to Liberia (folder 31); Rhea family genealogy; Elizabeth Rhea Anderson diary; Hiram Fain diary; patent medicine circulars; ephemera. 11 boxes of processed material. Unprocessed boxes are labeled: Gifts of John N. Fain, Aug. 2001, no date, and as received.

General

Boxes 1-7 were microfilmed for the McClung Collection in 1996. The East Tennessee Historical Society received the original gift. They kept the artifacts, several books, and some manuscripts, and then transferred ownership of the remainder of the collection to the McClung Historical Collection. Several items exhibited 3rd floor display cases in 2009.
