Scope and Contents

Papers of the family of Pierre Francois Buffat, his wife Sylvie Louise Tauxe Buffat, their children and relatives, who came from Switzerland to Knoxville, Tenn., in 1849. Pierre F. Buffat owned a farm at Spring Place in Knox County, Tenn. He ran a mill starting in 1861, and his son Alfred Buffat joined the business in 1865. Other family names included in the correspondence include: Bolli, Chavannes, Porta, Esperandieu, Sterchi, Truan, and Tauxe. Many of the letters were written in French, with typed translations made by Mrs. C. M. McClung. Papers also include: clippings; social invitations; railroad stock certificates; receipts; poetry; sketch books with drawings by Elisa Bolli Buffat while in Brazil; typed copies of Alfred Buffat’s “Memoirs of My Parents and Their Times,” “My Milling Experiences,” and “Recollections of My Mother.”; Elisa Bolli Buffat’s manuscript “Some Recollections of My Childhood Days and Incidents of My Life During the Civil War.”; extracts of Alfred Buffat’s “Memoirs” with photographs.
