Scope and Contents

Will A. McTeer was born in Blount County, Tenn., and lived there most of his life. He was a lawyer, legislator and banker. In 1862 he joined the Third Tennessee Cavalry of the Union Army as a private and retired as a major at the end of the Civil War. He married Mary T. Wilson, who died in 1898. In 1903 he married Mrs. Lucy Tilden Wilson, with whom he had one child, Wilson McTeer. Will A. McTeer attended Maryville College, served as circuit court clerk for Blount County from 1868-1878, was a Republican member of the Tennessee legislature in 1881-1883, was a U.S. Commissioner from 1878 to 1896, was president of the Bank of Maryville, and was treasurer of Maryville College. He was active in the Grand Army of the Republic, and was on the Selective Service Board of Blount County during World War I. Subjects include: personal and business correspondence; legal documents; receipts; letter books of McTeer’s outgoing letters; records of the Blount County Selective Service Board; records of the New Providence Presbyterian Church of Maryville; Maryville College; temperance; Republican politics; and the McTeer family.
