Scope and Contents

Papers of Selden Nelson (1857-1929), a United States Post Office employee in Knoxville for 35 years. He was a noted writer on East Tennessee history and genealogy. He was president of the Tennessee Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution, and served on the Civil Service Board in Knoxville. Papers include personal correspondence and genealogical queries to Nelson, especially on the families of John Tipton, Samuel Wear, General A.E. Smith, Robert Love Taylor, Alf. A. Taylor. Papers also include legal papers, minutes of a bar meeting, school work, 1897 will of Frederick Ball, SOR material, and an 1878 diary kept by Selden Nelson (in Miscellaneous; diary folder).
