Scope and Contents

Papers include: personal and business correspondence; 9 letterbooks of outgoing correspondence; 3 ledgers with stock and personal finances; 2 account books of the American Cattle Trust; receipts, etc. Railroads include: East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia; Memphis and Charleston; Knoxville and Kentucky; Knoxville and Ohio; Knoxville and Augusta; Southern Railway, and others. Businesses include: Southern Railway Security; American Cattle Trust; Western Union Beef; Lenoir City Company; Pacific Mail; Nashville Street Railway; Knoxville Woolen Mills; Knoxville Water; Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad; Roane Iron; East Tennessee Iron and Coal; Coal Creek Mining and Manufacturing; Crown Cotton Mills. Biographical / Historical

Charles McClung McGhee (1828-1907) was the son of John and Elizabeth McClung McGhee and the great-grandson of James White. He was a financier, railroad executive, and a philanthropist. He graduated from East Tennessee University in 1846 and married Isabella White, daughter of Hugh White. She died in 1848 and in 1857 he married her sister Cornelia. McGhee was involved in the growth of railroads in the South, and had coal and iron interests. He was on the Board of Trustees of the University of Tennessee, 1869-1884, and served in the Tennessee legislature in 1871. He established Lawson McGhee Library in 1885 in memory of one of his daughters. His daughter Annie married Calvin Morgan McClung; daughter Eleanor married J.C. Neely; Margaret married George Baxter, governor of the Wyoming Territory; and Betty, who married General Lawrence D. Tyson. McGhee lived in New York City, Knoxville, and Florida.
