Scope and Contents
Papers of the Hall and Stakely families. William Maulsby Stakely (1804-1898), born in Hawkins County, Tenn, married Sarah Smith (1811-1857) in 1828. They lived in Madisonville, Monroe County, Tenn. He was a postmaster and merchant. Moved to Union Springs, Ala, in 1863. Two of the Stakely daughter married two Hall cousins. Martha Stakely married Judge Elijah T. Hall of Knoxville in 1860. Caroline Stakely married James Spears Hall in 1874. James Hall ran a general store in Knoxville, which became J.S. Hall and Sons, and later, Hall-Brown, Inc. Their daughter Margaret married John Barksdale Jones in 1900. Papers include: correspondence; diaries; account books; bills and receipts; photographs; pamphlets; school work; clippings re: Hall and Stakely families; artifacts. Margaret Stakely’s diaries describe an 1858 trip to Canada and a trip from Arkansas to Tennessee in 1863. Letters of the Stakely daughters, who were students and teachers at the Knoxville Female Seminary, tell about education of the period. Margaret Hall Jones wrote “Recollections of Early Knoxville.” Topics: slavery, Civil War, politics, education, travel, Hall and Stakely families. Box 22 contains recataloged (from McClung shelves) item: Songs & piano music compiled and partly composed by Carrie Stakely. 273 pp. 1 vol. “The Conquered Banner” is on pp. 81-87. (formerly cataloged as Q 786.4; accession # 4435). Box 24 contains photographs (some removed from the VF Photograph Print Files; copy negs of some prints are in the box). Box 25: 8 cased photographs, Hall Family and no ID; 7 letters to Mrs. J.B. Jones, 1936-1950. Judge E. T. Hall and Martha A. Hall.
