Scope and Contents
Papers of Thomas Amis Rogers Nelson (1812-1873), a lawyer, judge, congressman, and defense counsel for President Andrew Johnson in his impeachment trial of 1868. Nelson began law practice in Washington County, Tenn, in 1832, served two terms as attorney general of the 1st judicial circuit, and was presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1844 and 1848. Strong Unionist, elected to the 36th Congress in 1859 and 1861; was captured by Confederate forces and imprisoned in Richmond, Va.. He moved to Knoxville in 1863. He was a judge of the state Supreme Court (1870-71); was a trustee of East Tennessee University (1865), and was active in the Presbyterian Church. He died of cholera in 1873 in Knoxville. In 1839 he married Ann Elizabeth Stewart, who died in 1850, leaving six children. In 1852 he married Mary Jones, and had five children with her. Papers include letters, speeches, professional papers, and nineteen scrapbooks of newspaper clippings covering 1839-1872. There is little personal correspondence between family members. Topics include business, law practice, Civil War, Andrew Johnson, railroads, slavery, politics. Perkins vs. White (no date) re: Melungeon case.
