Guy and Candie Carawan Collection (Photographs of Johns Island, S.C. by Robert Yellin and others)
Scope and Contents
Guy Carawan (1927-2015) was a musicologist and folk singer who worked closely with the Highlander Folk Center though much of his life. He and his wife Candie also collected music from coastal South Carolina in the 1960s and documented the music of the civil rights movement through its most important phases. The collection in this library is photographs from various photographers whose work illustrated books that they published. The major collection of their life's work is in the Southern Folklife Collection in Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
